Rant & Chant

#iOS development, #UI, #UX

Rant & Chant is an iOS application that amplifies your voice and encourages active participation in the fight for human rights, justice, and equality.

The app lets you discover new chants for your political cause, or write your own message. It helps you find organized events in New York City, and easily share pictures of your protest on social media to spread the word about the issues that shape our world.

I built Rant & Chant in collaboration with Vanessa Dine. Every protest needs a message. Our goal was to allow you to become the messenger.

With the ease of the app in your pocket, you can take a stand with Rant & Chant to start building a better world today.

Why Rant & Chant?

Rant & Chant was a reactionary passion project that evolved from the frustration of the 2016 election, the flood of grievances on social media—but the lack of action steps—and the need to do something to let people be heard.

The idea was to create an app to allow protesters and protest organizers to easily flood the social media channels—just like they flood the streets—with images of chants plastered on protest photos.

How it works

Rant & Chant features a listing of causes and highlights upcoming events and protests that are happening near you. When you tap on the cause, you will see a selection of chants to choose from, or you can write your own.

You can place any chant on a photo and style it as you see fit. Rant & Chant offers a wide selection of punchy typography to make sure the chants really stand out.

You can immediately share your chant picture through any channel on your phone—along with all the hashtags you might want already pre-filled.

Rant & Chant lists all the organized events happening near you. You can easily add events to your calendar, or access more information about an event or its organizers through heavily deeplinked content.

How it’s built?

The Rant & Chant app is built with Swift and uses Firebase for its backend and database. To easily manage the calendar, I hooked up a Google Calendar where we list all the protest events to the Firebase database via a google script that exports all the event information with the click of a button.

Rant & Chant features a purposefully minimalistic and bold design. The focus is on the words and the message, rather than following design standards. Rant & Chant is a tool that allows you to take a stand and encourages action, rather than an app you browse when you’re bored.

Next steps

One of the more exciting parts of this project was building the photo editor part. I had the opportunity to really explore AVFoundation, and I’m interested in building the functionality out further and possibly rolling out a standalone control, open-sourcing it, and distributing it through cocoapods and carthage to allow for easy dependency management.
